Sea Level Rise Resilience

Rising seas threaten Miami’s neighborhoods, beaches, and natural areas. We advance policies, implement solutions, and empower communities to adapt.

Miami’s low-lying geography makes it one of the most vulnerable cities to sea level rise. Flooding and stormwater challenges push pollutants into waterways, threatening ecosystems, public health, and infrastructure.

Miami Waterkeeper works to strengthen community resilience through advocacy for smart urban planning, enforcement of the urban development boundary, and policies that protect critical wetlands and natural buffers. We support nature-based solutions like mangrove and wetland restoration to absorb floodwaters and reduce impacts.
Our community engagement programs provide tools, workshops, and resources so residents can understand risks and prepare for rising waters. By combining science, policy, and outreach, we help South Florida adapt to climate change while protecting its water and ecosystems.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is proposing a $4.6 billion investment to address storm surge risk in our region. This proposal, called the “Back Bay Study,” proposes a range of “grey” infrastructure options like seawalls and flood gates, but largely leaves out nature-based solutions like mangrove and restoration and living shorelines.
