How clean is
your water?

Biscayne Bay is a shallow lagoon beside one of the nation’s fastest-growing cities, making it vulnerable to pollution. Miami Waterkeeper monitors local waters so you can make informed decisions about where it’s safe to swim, fish, and paddle.

Water Quality
Monitoring Program

Sites are sampled at least once a week. If a site shows high bacteria levels, it is resampled, and the results are updated promptly. Monitoring complements the Florida Healthy Beaches program and fills gaps, making it easier for the public to access water quality data.

Most recent test met water quality standards

Red:

Most recent test exceeded water quality standards

Special Status:

How Water Quality is Measured

Water quality is assessed using EPA standards for enterococci bacteria, the same benchmarks used by the Florida Department of Health for recreational waters.

Miami Waterkeeper tests for enterococci, fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) that are bacteria found in the intestines of humans and other warm-blooded animals. Their presence in water signals possible contamination from sewage or runoff, which could increase risk of illness. High FIB levels indicate that water may not meet recreational standards.

EPA thresholds for recreational waters:

  • 0–70 CFU/MPN per 100 mL:

    Meets standard for recreation
  • 70+ CFU/MPN per 100 mL:

    Exceeds standard for recreation

Municipal Water Quality Monitoring Reports

We compile and share the findings from our water quality monitoring to support communities and local decision-making. Past reports highlight trends, results, and insights from our partnerships with municipalities across South Florida.
