Miami Waterkeeper (in coalition with the Center for Biological Diversity, Florida Wildlife Federation, Inc., and Diving Equipment and Marketing Association) has advocated against the planned Port Everglades dredging expansion that would threaten local coral populations and water quality. The US Corp of Engineers deep dredge project could cause extensive damage to vulnerable wildlife and destroy thousands of corals.

According to the latest status report, “The Corps has completed approximately 65% of the design and engineering work on the deepening and widening features that the Corps currently plans to construct as part of the Project, with a current estimated completion in September 2021.”

While the project has not commenced, there exists a timeline in the status report: “The Corps presently anticipates that contract award for channel deepening and widening work will not occur before January 2022, and the channel deepening and widening work for the Project will not commence before August 2022, at the earliest.”
