This week, Miami Waterkeeper participated in a mobile workshop for The Funders’ Network Annual Conference. This year’s conference focused on how Miami is grappling with the stark realities of climate change and other environmental threats. The conference theme, Power Forward, included a call to action “for philanthropy to leverage the sector’s collective power to create communities and regions that are truly sustainable and just.” Tour leaders spoke on these themes during a mobile workshop boat cruise around Biscayne Bay and the Miami River.

Speakers from HistoryMiami, CLEO Institute, the Miami Downtown Development Authority, and Miami Waterkeeper’s General Counsel Kelly Cox educated participants on the relationship between Biscayne Bay and the Miami community. The speakers outlined Miami’s early growth and development along the waterfront. They also discussed the diverse resilience actions being taken from grassroots driven actions and agency-led actions to address climate change issues in our region. Kelly discussed challenges faced by our aquatic ecosystems and the legal advocacy, research, and engagement required to protect these ecosystems. Her segment featured an overview of our in-house water quality monitoring program, our Junior Ambassador program, and our 1,000 Eyes on the Water programs for community engagement.

Thank you to The Funders’ Network for featuring this important topic and for inviting us on board!
